Margaret Borthwick is a contemporary artist, based in Renfrewshire, Scotland.
Margaret's main love is the landscape and the patterns that are found in nature, especially in the woodlands and wetlands of her local area.
Margaret was a General Practitioner in Renfrewshire for 37 years and rediscovered her love of art when she semi-retired from medicine. She took a degree course in Painting when retired, obtaining her honours degree in 2023. She continues to paint and exhibit as artist.
She is an artist member of both the Glasgow Society of Women Artists and of the Paisley Art Institute.
Margaret had her artwork ‘The Pool at Calgary, Mull’ chosen as one of the Final 50 for the British Art Prize 2025. This is a prestigious group of shortlisted works chosen from thousands of entries. Out of a record 2,900 entries, 50 works by 50 artists were shortlisted for this major international competition and an exhibition held at the OXO Gallery, London in November 2025.
The British Art Prize provides artists with the possibility to sell their creations to a combined audience of around one million art enthusiasts and collectors, as well as national exposure in Artists & Illustrators. This painting was one of those sold in the online exhibition.
Margaret continues to enter occassional competitions. A painting was chosen for the extended long-list of the Jackson Art Prize. The competition attracted 16,280 entries from 110 countries. 4,200 were chosen for the extended long-list.
A postcard sized painting was long-listed in the appropriate section of the 2026 SAA Artist of the Year.
